Project Scope:
Tropical Storm Roy struck the Island
of Ebeye on January 7, 1988, leaving almost 900 persons homeless
(roughly 10 percent of the total resident population). The
Kwajalein Atoll Development Authority needed assistance to
develop several housing development strategies. Strategies
considered: a) the population redistribution of homeless persons
to new residential areas on the islands of Gugeegue and Ebeye,
b) the reduction of housing densities in existing and new
residential areas, c) the reduction of household occupancy
levels, d) the establishment of minimum houselot sizes and
setbacks, e) the establishment of basic housing, and sanitation
and building codes, and f) the establishment of a local housing
authority.
The development of these
strategies required the evaluation of existing population and
cultural trends, housing stock and community sanitation
conditions and needs, and the preparation of a ten-year forecast
of population and housing demand.
Conceptual community and site plans
for four residential areas were also prepared. These plans
served as a basis for the subsequent detailed engineering
design of each residential neighborhood |
